Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, as well as symbols, names, images, designs and models used in commerce.

These rights, like those obtained with the purchase of land or real estate, are , in the sense that they are based on the legally recognized right to prevent others from using them, and that ownership of these rights can be transferred.
