Copyright

Copyright protects your creative works in written or recorded form internationally for up to 70 years after your death. For a work to be protected by copyright, its creator must, at the time of its creation, have been a citizen, habitual resident, or subject of Canada, or of another country that has signed an international copyright agreement (such as the Berne Convention or the World Trade Organization).

Copyright protection protects your literary, artistic, dramatic or musical works :

  • Literary works, such as books, brochures, computer programs, and other written works

  • dramatic works, such as films, plays, screenplays and scripts

  • musical works, such as musical compositions with or without lyrics

  • artistic works, such as paintings, drawings, maps, photographs, sculptures and plans

Holding a copyright grants you:

  • the exclusive right to reproduce the work, in whole or in substantial part, in any form whatsoever;

  • the exclusive right to perform the work, or a significant portion thereof, in public;

  • the right to publish the work, or a substantial part of it, when it has not yet been made public.
